Barcelona is a city whose identity has changed many times over the course of history. Though many cultural influences can be seen throughout the city, they have been masked in recent years by the drive for a global tourism economy. Barcelona, by trying to fit in to the mold of what a destination city should be, has lost many of the characteristics which make it unique. The iconic architecture of Antonio Gaudí has been particularly exploited.

New architectural works are ubiquitous in Barcelona, frequently overshadowing the historical characteristics of their surroundings.
Visitors to Barcelona prefer to stay at isolated, iconic hotels as opposed to experiencing the city itself.
Many of Barcelona’s nicest public spaces remain unused by the locals.
Tourists gather at an overlook to look out over Barcelona, yet somehow the only thing they seem to focus on is Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia.
